Performance Physical Therapy

More Than Rehab. It’s a Return to Performance.

— No Referral Needed —

Built for athlete development.

Athletic Advantage Physical Therapy provides individualized, one-on-one care designed to help athletes recover from injury, reduce pain, restore movement, and safely return to training and competition.

Our approach combines sports medicine expertise with an understanding of the physical demands athletes face throughout training and competition. Rather than simply reducing symptoms, our goal is to identify the underlying factors contributing to injury and help athletes return stronger, more confident, and better prepared for long-term performance.

Whether recovering from surgery, managing a nagging issue, or navigating the return-to-sport process, athletes receive individualized care tailored to their goals, sport demands, and stage of recovery.

Why Athletes Choose Us

Athletic Advantage was built around the idea that rehabilitation and performance should not exist separately.

Our physical therapy model is designed specifically for active individuals and athletes seeking:

  • individualized care

  • longer one-on-one sessions

  • sports-focused rehabilitation

  • performance-oriented progression

  • direct communication with their provider

Because our environment also includes sports performance training, sports therapy services, and sport-specific instruction, athletes are able to transition more naturally from rehabilitation back into training and competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The good news is NO.

We are an out-of-network provider, meaning we do not directly participate with any insurance plans. This is a good thing. Many insurance companies do offer out-of-network benefits; and if you choose to submit for reimbursement with your insurance, we’ll provide an invoice that includes your diagnostic and treatment codes. If you’re curious about this option, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask, “What are my out-of-network physical therapy benefits?”

  • By being out-of-network, insurance cannot dictate the care that you receive. You can be treated like the individual that you are. You get quality time with the clinician, the care that you actually need, and no unexpected bill with additional charges.

Another benefit of out-of-network care is that, if needed, we can also spend time working on wellness, return-to-sport, and performance improvement activities. These are not reimbursed in traditional clinics and therefore rarely, if ever, offered. Patients who’ve experienced a cash-based model often report needing less visits and a quicker return to activity.

More personalized care and faster results… It's better for you. It’s better for us.

  • Because we do not participate in Medicare (a federal government program), we cannot provide therapy services for Medicare patients. Ouch, right?

That said, it is possible to participate in a wellness/maintenance program, which is not considered a medical treatment by Medicare. If you’re interested, send us an email or set up a phone call so we can chat more about how this works.

  • Yes! … (that was an easy one)

  • Nope! North Carolina is what’s called a direct-access state, meaning you can directly access a Doctor of Physical Therapy without needing a referral from another provider.

We’re trained to screen for red flags or conditions that are outside our scope of practice and will refer accordingly. In many cases, we can help you get an appointment with other providers sooner than you would trying to call on your own.

Many athletes unknowingly delay their time to treatment by getting (often unnecessary) urgent care visits, orthopedic appointments, and expensive imaging, ultimately just to be referred to Physical Therapy anyways!

Save time. Save money. Feel better faster. Come see us!

  • No. While Athletic Advantage specializes in active individuals and athletes, physical therapy services may also benefit non-athletes seeking movement improvement, pain reduction, or rehabilitation support.

  • Yes. One advantage of Athletic Advantage’s integrated environment is the ability to coordinate rehabilitation, performance training, and return-to-sport progression within the same system.

  • Yes. Athletic Advantage works with athletes recovering from a variety of surgical procedures and helps guide progressive return-to-sport rehabilitation when appropriate.

Why Cash-Based?

Most clients pay less overall for cash-based care — while receiving more time, better outcomes, and faster progress

Traditional Model

Rates vary by insurance contract, deductible, and facility fees

Care delegated to aides or techs

Increased visit frequency, often driven by billing limits, not clinical need

After deductibles & copays, many clients pay up to $1,200+ per episode of care

Must have a referral, pre-authorization, or certain diagnosis codes approved

Often restricted to what’s “covered”, not necessarily what’s most effective

Our Model

Simple, flat rate — no hidden fees, no surprise bills

One-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. No aides, no double-booking

Most clients average 6-8 visits, not 12-18. You pay only for what you need

Total cost less than many insurance-based plans after copays

No referral needed. Get started right away
